Taking an Oath of Office is a universal practice in law enforcement and public service. The Oath expresses the officer's intention to respect applicable Constitutional rights. POLICY: It is the policy of the Albany Police Department that all sworn officers, prior to assignment, will take and subsequently abide by an Oath of Office to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the State of New York. I. ADMINISTRATION OF POLICE OFFICER’S OATH OF OFFICE A. All personnel, prior to assuming sworn status, will take and subsequently abide by an Oath of Office to enforce the law and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America and the State of New York. B. Officers shall attend a Swearing-In Ceremony to perform the ceremonial Oath of Office, publicly proclaiming their Oath of Office. The Oath is administered by the City Mayor or other appropriate public official and affirmed by the Chief of Police. C. All sworn personnel, upon appointment, will take the following Oath of Office: 1. I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the Office of Police Officer in the Department of Police, according to the best of my ability.
