CITY OF ALBANY COMMON COUNCIL 24 EAGLE STREET, ROOM 206 ALBANY, NEW YORK 12207 TELEPHONE (518) 434-5087 PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: November 12, 2020 Contact: Michele Andre Senior Legislative Aide [PHONE REDACTED] / [EMAIL REDACTED] ALBANY COMMON COUNCIL DEMAND OFFICER DAVID HAUPT TERMINATION IMMEDIATELY FROM THE ALBANY POLICE DEPARTMENT ALBANY, NY – Members of the Albany Common Council released the following letter addressed to Mayor Sheehan and Police Chief Hawkins calling for the immediate termination of Officer David W. Haupt from the Albany Police Department in response to recent racist comments he made: “Officer Haupt’s comments regarding African-Americans shows he subscribes to racist beliefs and stereotypes which ultimately compromises his ability to effectively protect and serve the residents of the City of Albany, of which almost 30 percent are African-American. “The residents of Albany deserve officers who don’t hold disdain and racist views towards its own residents. It is preposterous that we would continue to pay the salary of an officer who holds such beliefs about a large segment of our city's population. Our officers should be held to the highest standards and held accountable for their actions. We urge the immediate termination of Officer Haupt as a member of the Albany Police Department.”
